Encroachment by religious fanatics in Shri Changdev Maharaj Temple !

  • A case of Land Jihad in Jalgaon

  • Devotees demand removal of unauthorised tombs

Mumbai – The ancient Shri Kshetra Changdev Maharaj Temple, which is around 1,200 years old, is situated at the confluence of the Tapi and Purna rivers in Muktainagar taluka of Jalgaon district. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Allegations have been made that a dargah is being constructed within the temple premises. Tombs covered with green sheets can also be seen there.

1. Devotees have been hurt by encroachments in the form of tombs in the ancient and historic temple complex, unauthorised constructions, and attempts that could eventually transform small tombs into a dargah (a Muslim shrine built around a grave). (A similar incident occurred at Malanggad, where religious fanatics occupied a place of reverence for Hindus ! – Editor)

2. Devotees have stated, “Pandav Wada in Erandol fell into the hands of religious fanatics, and Hindus later had to struggle for many years over the issue. Such a situation should not arise in the case of the Changdev Maharaj Temple. The Archaeological Survey of India should demolish the unauthorised tombs here.”

3. This temple is built in the 12th-century Hemadpanthi architectural style, and Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar made a significant contribution to its restoration.

4. Devotees have demanded that the local administration and the Archaeological Survey of India remove the encroachments at the earliest, stating that a case of Land Jihad is taking place in the temple premises.

Editorial Perspective

  • Why should devotees have to make such a demand ? Were the administration and the Archaeological Survey of India asleep when the tombs were being built ?
  • A similar incident occurred at Malanggad, where religious fanatics occupied a Hindu place of reverence. Had timely action been taken, such disputes could have been prevented.
