Hindus in Bangladesh angered over the insult to Shriram

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The Hindu community organised a torchlight procession in Dhaka on the night of 19th June to protest the insult to Shriram. Hindu students leading the procession alleged that a violent mob of radical Muslims had recently placed shoes on an image of Shriram, thereby insulting Him. They stated that this was a grave insult to Shriram and the Hindu community. They warned that if the culprits were not arrested within 72 hours, a memorandum would be submitted to the Ministry of Religious Affairs. They also announced that, apart from seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, various marches and programmes would be organised in protest.

1. The massive torchlight procession in Dhaka began at Shahbagh Junction and proceeded via Shahbagh Square and Mateshwar Bhavan Road to the National Press Club. Participants raised slogans such as “Jai Shriram” throughout the march.
2. Two separate programmes were also organised in Dhaka on 19th June to protest the insult to Shriram. Two factions of an organisation called “Hindu Mahajot” held separate events. One was organised in front of the National Press Club, while the other was conducted through a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
3. Hindus formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club to protest against the radical elements. The National Committee for Puja Celebrations has announced protest demonstrations across the country against the insult to Shriram.
4. Prior to the Dhaka incident, demonstrations had also been held in Palashbari in Gaibandha district of northern Bangladesh against the insult to Shriram.
Shriram temples to be built in all 64 districts of the countryParticipants in the procession stated that Shriram temples would now be built not only in Palashbari but across all 64 districts of Bangladesh. They expressed anger over the soft approach of the Tarique Rahman government towards radical elements. According to them, this lenient attitude has led to an increase in incidents of persecution against Hindus. They demanded that the government ensure the safety and security of Hindus. |
What is the issue?
Construction of a temple along with an 81-foot-tall idol of Shriram was underway in Palashbari, Gaibandha. The local Hindu community was installing the idol in a temple being built on their own land. However, radical Muslims led by Jamaat-e-Islami launched a campaign against the project. A crowd of radical activists gathered outside the temple, raised slogans and threw shoes at the idol of Shriram that was under construction. The Hindu community filed a Police complaint regarding the incident; however, no arrests have been made so far. This has increased anger among Hindus, who are now organising protest marches at various places demanding action against the accused.
