
Mumbai, 19 June – The ‘Maharashtra Devasthan Inam Nirmulan Adhiniyam, 2026’ prepared by the State Government for sale of temple lands was strongly opposed by temples and devout Hindu activists across the State; therefore, it has been cancelled. The State Revenue Minister, Chandrashekhar Bawankule assured to prepare a revised draft which will be in the interest of temples. A committee has been set up for it and representatives of various temples in the State have been included in the committee.

The committee has been set up under additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Registration and Stamp Duty Department. On 17.06.2026, the Revenue Department has published the Government’s decision in which the names of the members included in the committee have been given.
Significant role of ‘Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh’

The draft of ‘Maharashtra Devasthan Inam Nirmulan Adhiniyam 2026’ prepared by the State Government may result in land-mafia grabbing the temple lands. This risk was brought to the notice of the Government. Many temples led by the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh (MMM) had opposed this draft. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule had a meeting with the MMM representatives on 26.05.2026 in Mantralaya. Representatives of various temples also attended the meeting. Chandrashekhar Bawankule promised to take a decision in the interest of temples. On 06.06.2026, he declared about withholding of the draft.
