Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – Vinod Kumar, a BJP youth leader, was murdered after being attacked with a hammer by an armed Muslim mob in Bairagiwala, in the Sahaspur area of Dehradun. Following the incident, which occurred on the evening of 13 June, Devout Hindus strongly condemned the attack and pelted stones at Muslim homes. Police have registered cases against 12 Muslims in connection with the matter, and reports indicate that illegal houses belonging to the accused were demolished using bulldozers. Vinod Kumar served as the District Social Media Co-ordinator of the BJP’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) Morcha.

1. Vinod Kumar and his family had a long-standing dispute over water with their neighbour, Imtiyaz. On 13 June, another disagreement arose concerning the supply of water. Shortly afterwards, an armed Muslim mob attacked Vinod Kumar’s house.

2. During the attack, Vinod Kumar was killed. His brothers, Ashok and Rajesh, along with his sister-in-law Sushma, sustained serious injuries.

3. In his complaint to the Police, Ashok Kumar, Vinod’s injured brother, stated that there had previously been a dispute concerning water from a neighbouring field owned by Imtiyaz. At approximately 6:00 p.m. on 13 June, Razzak, Imtiyaz, Aman, Yunus, Shahbaz, Sharafal Ali, Masoom, Adil, Shamoon, Salman, Javed, Intizar, and an estimated 30–35 other residents of Bairagiwala entered their home carrying sticks, wooden planks, hammers, and spades. They assaulted members of the family. Vinod was killed with a hammer during the attack.

Editorial Perspective

• The fact that even though the BJP is in power in the state, radical Muslims are killing leaders of this ruling party indicates that they no longer fear the Government. Strict action against such elements is the need of the hour!
• An armed Muslim mob attacks over what appears to have been a trivial reason concerning water suggests that the assault was premeditated. Such incidents occurring repeatedly show that Hindus are not adequately prepared to confront such attacks. This is shameful for the Hindu majority.
