Conservation of the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Devi to be undertaken from 22–24 June!

  • Temple to remain closed to devotees for Darshan on 23 and 24 June!

  • Uncertainty remains over whether a chemical coating will be applied to the idols!

Pandharpur – With a view to ensuring the long-term preservation and conservation of the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Devi, necessary action will be undertaken under the guidance of the Archaeological Survey of India, the State Department of Archaeology, and experts in the field of idol conservation. Based on the technical guidance and recommendations received, conservation work on the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Devi will be carried out between 22 and 24 June. In order to safely complete the required technical procedures and preserve the sanctity of the idols the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Temple will remain closed to devotees for darshan on 23 and 24 June, according to H.B.P. Gahininath Maharaj Ausekar, Co-Chairman of the Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir Committee. However, it remains unclear whether a chemical coating will be applied to the idols. Such a coating is opposed by the Warkari Sampradaya, the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh and various Hindu organisations. (Devotees should be informed in advance about the exact nature of the proposed conservation work. It should also be clarified whether the administration has sought guidance from religious authorities before undertaking the conservation process. – Editor)

Previously, conservation work on the idols was carried out in 1988, 2005, 2020, and 2022. As approximately five years have elapsed since the last major conservation exercise, natural wear have been observed in certain parts of the idols. To repair microscopic holes and worn sections, and to extend the lifespan of the idols, a protective coating will be provided. The entire process will be conducted under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and the State Department of Archaeology, Pune.
