Supreme Court Expresses Displeasure Over Appeal Pending for 41 Years

  • Interim Bail Granted to 72-Year-Old Convict in Murder Case

  • Notice issued to Uttar Pradesh Government

New Delhi – Expressing deep displeasure over the pendency of the appeal of a convict in a murder case for 41 years, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to the concerned person. It also issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government for this delay.

Vijay Singh was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1985 by a sessions court in Kanpur for the murder of his brother in 1983. Then he was 28 years old. He then challenged the lower court’s decision in the High Court. He was granted bail pending appeal. He was out on bail for four decades after that.

In February 2026, after 41 years, the High Court dismissed his appeal and upheld the decision of the Sessions Court. Singh challenged the High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court. The court was informed that Vijay Singh, who is now 72 years of age, was suffering from various ailments and his conduct was satisfactory during the period of bail. Taking this into account the Supreme Court granted him interim bail. The matter will be heard next after compiling all the case related documents.
