Mumbai – Amazon India has insulted the great Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata, who gave the world the gift of zero, for the promotion of its products. Amazon has used Aryabhata for its commercial gains through this advertisement portraying him as a delivery boy (someone who delivers goods) and diminished his stature; it has put clownish dialogues in his mouth. These and other objectionable depictions are included in the advertisement. The advertisement has angered patriots and history enthusiasts. Citizens have demanded that Amazon immediately withdraw the advertisement and apologize, stating that it has insulted Indian culture and history. They have also called upon the Central Government to take immediate action in the matter. (Why should there be a need to make such demand? Why does the Government not act on its own? – Editor)

1. In the advertisement, Aryabhata is shown as having returned to today’s modern age. Some children mock him by asking, “Who are you?” and “Uncle, what materials have you brought?”

2. Aryabhata is portrayed as deeply restless to show humanity the importance of ‘zero.’ However, this great discovery has been linked by Amazon to their “Zero Delivery Fee,” “Zero Search Fee,” and “Zero Handling Fee.” Such a connection is highly objectionable.

Editorial Perspective

  • Amazon has repeatedly displayed pictures of Hindu deities on products such as footwear and toilet-related products. Now, through this advertisement, the company's anti-India conspiracy stands exposed!
  • The Central government should conduct a thorough inquiry into this matter and ban Amazon! Indian citizens should boycott the company too!
  • ‘Amazon India’ should issue an apology for disrespecting the great Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhata!
