The world-famous ‘Atmalinga’ of Mahabaleshwar in Gokarna submerged in sewage water!

Municipality fails to manage sewage properly, Hindus express anger

Karwar (Karnataka) – A disaster struck the pilgrimage site of Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district, which is known as the ‘Kashi of the South’. Sewage water entered the Garbhagruha (sanctum sanctorum), where the Atmalinga is situated, in the Shri Mahabaleshwar Temple here. Due to heavy rains, the area around the sacred Atmalinga was completely filled with foul-smelling black-colored water. The priests immediately made desperate efforts to drain all the water with the help of buckets. The priests, as well as the locals and thousands of devotees, expressed their anger, saying, “Such a bad situation had never arisen in the history of the temple”.

There is widespread anger against the municipality and its officials for failing to properly manage the sewage system despite the temple generating crores of rupees in revenue. This is not merely a technical problem but a major disaster in the history of the temple. The administrative officials are directly responsible for such neglect of this sacred place. The priests warned of a strong agitation if a permanent solution is not found immediately.

The Garbhagruha has been temporarily cleaned by draining the sewage from it. However, it is feared that the same situation may recur if the rains continue.

Editorial Perspective

It is not only outrageous that such an incident occurred in a temple, a centre of Hindu faith, but it also represents the height of administrative negligence Responsibility for this colossal blunder must be fixed, and those responsible should be dismissed. If such an incident had occurred at a mosque, by now fatwas would have been issued against the administrative officials and government buildings would have been set on fire!
