Kolkata – Jahangir Khan, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency, was arrested by the State Police Special Task Force (STF). Jahangir Khan, an accused in a case related to election violence, had been absconding for a long time. He had earlier been in the news for openly challenging the police during the polling period. Police said he was arrested near the Indo-Nepal border in North Bengal on charges of extortion.

  1. The interim protection granted by the Calcutta High Court to Jhangir Khan ended on 26 May. There are 7 FIRs registered against him at the Falta Police Station in South 24 Pargana District.
  2. A police officer said that Jahangir Khan was arrested near the Indo-Nepal border in North Bengal; however, the police did not provide detailed information about the arrest.

What is the case?

During the West Bengal Assembly elections, voting in Falta was halted due to allegations of violence and violations of election rules. During the elections, Jahangir Khan had challenged the Police Officer deputed by the Election Commission, saying a dialogue from the film ‘Pushpa’ stating ‘Pushpa will not bow’. This caused a lot of tension in that area.
