Vijayapura (Karnataka) – In protest against the Congress Government’s decision to permit the wearing of hijabs in schools and colleges, an attempt was made to distribute saffron scarves to Hindu students in Vijayapura. Prominent Hindutva MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and his supporters, who participated in the campaign, were detained by the police on 5 June. They were released shortly afterwards. On 5 June, pro-Hindutva activists gathered near the Darbar High School and College carrying saffron scarves.

As preparations were under way to distribute the scarves to students, the Police intervened and stopped them. This led to a heated exchange between the Police and the supporters. MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal subsequently arrived at the scene and raised slogans against the Government. As soon as they began distributing saffron scarves to students, the police detained Yatnal and his supporters. Angered by this, the supporters protested by sitting in front of a Police vehicle. Later, Yatnal and his supporters were released.

Following his release, the MLA criticised the State Government and demanded that it immediately reconsider its decision to permit hijabs.

Editorial Perspective

While the Congress Government in Karnataka, a ‘Pakistani regime’, has permitted Muslim girls to wear hijabs in the name of religious freedom, Hindu protest campaigns are being suppressed. Note that Hindus in the State are suffering the consequences of the mistake of electing the Congress party to power.
