Borivali (Mumbai) Nancy S.T. Bus Stand: A shocking ordeal of filth!

Condition of the toilets worse than public toilets

  • In 2023, representatives of Sanatan Prabhat reviewed the cleanliness and facilities provided to passengers at bus stands at the district and taluka levels in the State. A news series on the poor condition of bus stands was published in Sanatan Prabhat. A delegation of ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti met the then Director of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), Shekhar Channe, and presented the plight of bus stands to him, referring to our news. Following that, the ‘Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Clean and Beautiful Bus Stand’ initiative was launched in Maharashtra from 1st May 2023.

  • This MSRTC has run this campaign for the last 3 years. Many bus stands are making good efforts under this initiative. This is also bringing about a radical change in the bus stands in the State, but still, some bus stands are completely ignoring cleanliness. The authorities are ignoring even the minimum aspects of cleanliness. To bring this situation to the attention of the government and society, Sanatan Prabhat is once again starting a news series about the plight of bus stands.

Mumbai – Nancy S.T. Bus Stand in Borivali (East) is used for bus services to various districts of the State as well as other States. However, there is a lack of cleanliness in this important bus stand in Western Mumbai. There are clogged toilets and urinals, their doors are broken, and the walls are dirty. The condition of the toilets in this bus stand is such that even public toilets look better. The condition of the toilets is so pitiful that one will certainly turn away after seeing the condition of the toilets. When a reporter of Sanatan Prabhat inspected, there was a large amount of plastic bag garbage outside this toilet. It was seen that the area had not been cleaned for many days.

Poor condition of other facilities at Nancy S.T. bus stand

Plastic bag waste outside the drinking water

1. There is a drinking water facility in the bus stand; however, some of the taps of this facility have been out of order for many days. There was also garbage piled up under this facility.

2. The area of the bus stand is about 3 acres. Some people were sitting in the neglected corners of this area drinking alcohol between 11:30 a.m and 12 p.m. ‘Some people from the slums near the bus stand and drug addicts use the space in the bus stand to drink alcohol,’ said an employee there. The bus stop has a protective wall about 5 feet high; however, these drunkards jump over it.

3. Shrubs have grown in some places around the bus stand. There are potholes in some places around the bus stand. Water accumulates in these potholes during the monsoon.

Insufficient staff and a lack of funds

When a representative of Sanatan Prabhat met the assistant traffic inspector of the bus stand, Arun Gadari, and asked him about the condition of the bus stand, he said, “The construction of the toilet at the bus stand has been done with the funds of the local MLAs. The contract for cleaning this toilet was given to a private contractor. As the contract period has expired, the toilets are currently cleaned by the MSRTC employees. Due to the shortage of staff and the large area of the bus stand, there are limitations in maintaining cleanliness. Some drug addicts come to the bus stand area and drink. To prevent them, it is necessary to increase the height of the protective walls and appoint security guards.”

Overall, it is necessary to pay attention to the condition of the toilets at this bus stand, their cleanliness, repair of water taps, maintaining cleanliness in the bus stop area, filling potholes in the bus stop area, preventing drunkards from coming to the area, etc. It is necessary to make provision for funds for these works through MSRTC or through public participation.
