Demand to purchase and preserve ‘Savarkar Sadan’ in Maharashtra, on the lines of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s house in London

'Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad' makes the demand through a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai – Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s house in London was purchased by the Maharashtra government in 2015 and is being conserved. However, ‘Savarkar Sadan’ in Mumbai, where Swatantryaveer Savarkar lived for 38 years, remains neglected. Like Dr Ambedkar’s house, the Maharashtra government should also purchase ‘Savarkar Sadan’ and maintain and preserve it and grant it the status of a national monument, demanded Adv. Virendra Ichalkaranjikar, National President of Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Dr Ambedkar conducted the Mahad Satyagraha to fight for Dalit rights, while Swatantryaveer Savarkar worked to end casteism by establishing the Patit Pavan Temple in Ratnagiri, organizing inter-caste meals there and allowing Harijans to enter the temple. The Maharashtra government spent Rs 36.4 crore to buy Dr Ambedkar’s house in London, and Rs 1.25 crore to purchase various items for it. The government has spent Rs 56 crore for various other monuments, and Rs 196 crore for the International Centre in Delhi. On the other hand, the government is indifferent towards Savarkar Sadan.

Advocate Virendra Ichalkaranjikar’s letter sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis –

Government intervention necessary

Currently, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court regarding this structure. A well-known developer has filed an intervention petition in the matter. This indicates that possibly the developer is interested in this historical structure. Therefore, the government should intervene to save this historical structure.

The Savarkar family has made great sacrifices for the country. It would be unfair to put the financial burden of preserving the family’s house on the same family. The property of ‘Savarkar Sadan’ should be purchased from the respective owners and this house should be made a place of inspiration for the coming generations. Sufficient funds should be provided for the preservation and promotion of this structure. Adv. Virendra Ichalkaranjikar has also made a strong request in this letter that the Union Government should intervene in this matter to honor the sacrifice of Swatantryaveer Savarkar for the nation and his contribution to the work of nation building.
