Pakistan reverses decision to restore old Hindu names to squares and roads in Lahore

Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz (in the circle)

Islamabad (Pakistan) – A few days ago, Pakistan had announced that certain squares and roads in Lahore would be restored to their old Hindu-era names. The decision had surprised many people and earned praise for the Punjab Government. However, bowing to pressure from extremists within the country, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has now withdrawn the decision. This has exposed Pakistan’s hypocrisy before the world.

1. On 20 March, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had decided to restore old Hindu names to roads, lanes, and historic colleges in Lahore. Information regarding the move was deliberately publicised through the media in an apparent attempt to erase Pakistan’s image as a centre of extremism.

2. Under this decision, ‘Islampura’ in Lahore was to be renamed ‘Krishna Nagar’, while ‘Babri Masjid Chowk’ was to be renamed ‘Jain Mandir Chowk’.

3. Although there was no immediate public outcry in Pakistan against Maryam Nawaz’s decision, opposition was reportedly building internally. Eventually, when the matter escalated, Maryam Nawaz postponed the renaming decision.

Editorial Perspective

Under the guise of preserving so-called heritage, Pakistan attempted to fool the world but ultimately had to retreat. This once again makes it clear that Pakistan cannot be trusted in any matter.
