We will not tolerate cow smuggling and slaughter: Pratap Sarnaik

Maharashtra Transport Minister warns in the backdrop of Bakri Eid

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnayak

Mumbai – In the backdrop of Bakri Eid, the State Government has adopted a strict stance against illegal transportation of cows, unlawful slaughterhouses, and inhuman cruelty towards cattle. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued a strong warning stating that “cow smuggling and slaughter will not be tolerated under any circumstances”.

He said,

1. Smuggling of cows increases during certain festivals. Cows are slaughtered, starved, and loaded into vehicles in an inhumane manner. This is not only a violation of the law but also an attack on the sentiments of the Hindu community.

2. The State has given the honour of ‘Rajyamata’ (Mother of the State) to the indigenous cow. Those who slaughter the sacred cow and transport it illegally will face strict legal action. The State government is committed to cow protection.

Special verification drive in the State

Under the instructions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, authorities have been directed to undertake action on a war footing between 25 and 28 May. According to a circular issued by the Office of the Transport Commissioner to all Regional Transport Officers, Deputy Regional Officers, border check-posts, and transport authorities, special blockades and vehicle inspection drives will be conducted in border areas, major cities including Mumbai, and sensitive routes across the State. Every vehicle transporting animals will undergo strict inspection. Authorities will verify whether the required permissions, certificates, and animal welfare regulations have been complied with. Vehicles violating the rules will face action and be seized.

Coordination for this drive will involve the Transport Department, local Police, traffic Police, Animal Husbandry Department, and various cow protection and animal welfare organisations. Special squads have also been appointed to prevent the supply of animals to illegal slaughterhouses. Concerned officials have been instructed to submit a detailed report of actions taken under the special campaign to the Government.
