Life convict released using fake Supreme Court order

Incident at Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru comes to light after 8 years

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – It has come to light after eight years that a convict serving a life sentence was released from the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison (Bengaluru Central Prison) after submitting a forged Supreme Court release order. Police have begun an investigation into the matter.

Bengaluru: A life convict who secured release from Parappana Agrahara Jail 8 years ago using a fake Supreme Court relief order has now been booked again.

The accused, Shankar Armugam, was serving a life sentence in a 2001 kidnapping-for-ransom case.

1. The accused, identified as Shankar A., had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001 in a kidnapping and extortion case. He was serving his sentence at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

2. He was released on 13 November 2018 after prison officials were presented with a forged copy of a Supreme Court order. At the time of release, he had also paid a fine of ₹10,000.

3. In connection with the matter, the police at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station registered a case on 20 May under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and initiated an investigation.

4. According to the complaint, the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services received information that a prisoner had been released using a fake court order. An internal enquiry conducted thereafter reportedly confirmed the allegations.

5. It has also been suspected that lapses in duty by the then prison officials may have contributed to the convict’s release.

6. The investigation has revealed that the prisoner was released without verifying the authenticity of the court order and without following the required procedures.
