Violence by inmates in Kapurthala jail in Punjab

Police resort to lathi (baton) charge

Kapurthala (Punjab) – On the night of 23 May, inmates in the Kapurthala jail vandalised the barracks (prison cells). During the incident, damage was also caused to the prison infrastructure. Attempts were also made to set fire to some parts of the jail. The violence reportedly began following a dispute related to one inmate, after which violent clashes broke out between convicted prisoners and undertrials. When the prison administration tried to mediate and stop the fighting, the inmates allegedly attempted to scuffle with the officials. Reports have also emerged that prison Police personnel trying to bring the situation under control were attacked.

To prevent the situation from worsening further, a large number of security personnel have been deployed both inside and outside the prison. An official stated that “to bring the situation under control, Police used tear gas shells and carried out a lathi charge.” Authorities have not yet clearly stated whether there were any casualties in the violence; however, at least 5–6 ambulances were seen stationed outside after the incident.

Editorial Perspective

Even when criminals are imprisoned in the country, how many of them actually lose their criminal tendencies is a matter for research, though ordinary people already know the truth. On the contrary, many become even more hardened criminals after going to jail. In Hindu Rashtra, criminals will be made to perform strict spiritual practice to transform their nature!
