Guwahati (Assam) – Former MLA Ali Akbar Miah of the A.I.U.D.F. (All India United Democratic Front) party has been arrested for making provocative statements against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Police. In connection with Bakri Eid, Miah threatened the Police by saying that if law and order authorities intervened (to stop animal sacrifice), then the Police themselves would also be “sacrificed”. After a video related to this statement went viral on social media, the Police took action. According to the Police, such statements can create tension in society and are against the law.
On the other hand, several local Eidgah committees (places where namaz is offered) have voluntarily announced that cows and buffaloes will not be sacrificed in order to avoid any dispute.
