Bangladesh allows US military to use Chattogram and Matarbari ports

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Three agreements have been signed between Bangladesh and the United States. As a result, the way has been cleared for the US military to gain access to the ports of Chattogram and Matarbari in Bangladesh. After the agreements come into force, US Navy warships and military aircraft will be able to use these ports, along with related air force bases, for logistics supply, refueling, maintenance, repairs, and troop movements. In addition, confidential military and intelligence information will be exchanged between the armed forces of both countries. US President Donald Trump had reportedly given clear indications that if defence agreements were not finalised, the 19% concession on import duties and customs quota relaxations would be withdrawn. Earlier, Pakistan had provided Bangladesh with two JF-17 training aircraft. These aircraft were supplied for the training of Bangladeshi pilots and aircraft operations. The JF-17 fighter aircraft has been jointly developed by Pakistan and China.

Concern for India

The ports of Chattogram and Matarbari are located in the northern region of the Bay of Bengal. Chattogram is around 80 km from the Sabroom area in Tripura, while Matarbari is around 150 km away. This could enable the US Navy to remain deployed for longer periods near India’s northeastern region.
