Union Government refutes rumours regarding Gold Monetisation Scheme

New Delhi – Claims are being circulated on social media that the Union Government is taking steps to monetise gold belonging to temples. The Government has clarified that these claims are completely false and baseless, and that no such decision is being taken. This clarification was issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) through a post on X.

What is the claim?

Messages circulating on social media claimed that the Government would now take control of gold reserves belonging to religious institutions and temples. It was further alleged that this gold would be used to meet the country’s economic needs and that gold placed on temple domes and structures would be declared as a ‘strategic gold reserve’.

The Union Ministry of Finance has also clarified that neither the Reserve Bank of India nor the Union Government has issued any such order or directive. It stated that temple wealth falls under the jurisdiction of their respective trusts and that the Government has no control over it.
