West Bengal Govt transfers 120 acres of ‘Chicken Neck’ area to the Union Government

Kolkata – The BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari Government in West Bengal has taken a major decision to transfer approximately 120 acres of land and National Highway 7 in the strategically highly sensitive ‘Chicken Neck’ (Siliguri Corridor) region in the northern area of West Bengal to the Union Government. This step has been taken to strengthen the security of North-East India.

What is the Chicken Neck?

Near the city of Siliguri in West Bengal lies a narrow strip of land. This region is surrounded by the borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. China’s border is also located nearby. This corridor is extremely narrow, with its width at certain places being only about 20 to 22 kilometres. It is the only land route connecting the rest of India to the eight North-Eastern States — Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. On India’s map, this region resembles the neck of a chicken, hence it is referred to as the Chicken Neck.
