Violent protest by Muslims in Kolkata over offering namaz on roads; three Police personnel injured

  • Mob of 250 Muslims pelted stones at the Police

  • Police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control

Kolkata – The BJP Government in West Bengal has banned offering namaz on roads. In protest against this, Muslims attempted to stage a demonstration in the Park Street area. When the protest turned violent, the Police carried out a lathi-charge on them.

On 17th May, the Administration was carrying out a bulldozer action against illegal construction in the area. At the same time, a dispute arose regarding offering namaz on the road. More than 250 Muslim protesters opposed the action and pelted stones at the Police. The protesters blocked the road and appealed to people to join the protest. During this time, pushing and scuffling also took place between the Police and the Muslims. Seeing the deteriorating situation, the Police cordoned off the area. Additional security forces were called in. The Police used force to bring the situation under control. In this violent clash, three Police personnel were injured.

CPI (M) supports law-breaking Muslims

Mohammed Salim, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said that the Government’s decisions should not be such that people are forced to come onto the streets. (Does Salim mean to say that offering Namaz on roads is a Government decision? – Editor) People participated enthusiastically in the elections. The people are demanding change. This has not happened so that the situation worsens further. The Government should now improve the situation. People voted for peace and law and order. If that is disturbed, then people will naturally come onto the streets. (Hindus voted for law and order, and accordingly the BJP Government in West Bengal is functioning. Whoever comes onto the streets against this will naturally be dealt with appropriately. This is what is evident from this incident! – Editor)

Editorial Perspective

In West Bengal, the Police will have to face such clashes at many places as, it will naturally take time to crush this criminal tendency that has continued for many years.
