Throwing non-veg food waste in River Ganga can hurt Hindu religious sentiments: Allahabad HC

Paryagraj (UP) – The Allahabad High Court has observed that throwing leftovers of non-vegetarian food can hurt religious sentiments of Hindus. Justice Rajeev Lochan Shukla made this observation while granting bail to 5 out of the 14 Muslim men against whom a case had been registered for organising an Iftar party on a boat in the River Ganga in March.

1. The Court stated that the remorse expressed by the accused could be considered while granting bail. Not only the accused, but even their family members had expressed regret for the pain caused to society.

2. The Court further observed that none of the offences initially imposed upon the accused carried a punishment exceeding 7 years. The Court also expressed doubt regarding the boatman’s complaint alleging that the accused had forcibly taken control of his boat. The Court stated that before registration of the case, the concerned boatman had not lodged any complaint regarding extortion or coercion allegedly committed against him. The delay in making such allegations raises suspicion regarding his version of events, the Court added.

Editorial Perspective

When the religious sentiments of Hindus are hurt, they often remain passive or merely submit memorandums to the Police or administration and then become inactive. On the other hand, when the religious sentiments of Muslims are hurt, some immediately raise slogans of “Sar Tan Se Juda” (beheading) and attempt to take the law into their own hands. As a result, the Police and administration act immediately and take action against those accused of hurting sentiments!
