12,000 sq. mts. of prime Govt land in Mumbai grabbed by ‘Bombay Diocesan Trust Association Pvt. Ltd.’ for more than 24 years

Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad files complaint with the Union Government’s Revenue Department demanding action

Mumbai – A prime government land parcel measuring 12,206 square metres in the Mazgaon area of Mumbai is under the control of an institution named ‘Bombay Diocesan Trust Association Pvt. Ltd.’ Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad has claimed that this control is illegal. The organisation has submitted a complaint to the Union Government’s Revenue Department demanding immediate action against those responsible, stating that such incidents are occurring due to the inaction of the Revenue Department.

What is the matter?

According to agreements made in 1907, 1913, and 1931, the land in Mazgaon had been leased for religious and educational purposes. The lease expired on 31 August 2002. As per rules, once the lease expired, the government was required either to reclaim possession of the land or renew the lease at revised rates. However, even after 24 years, no concrete action has reportedly been taken.

No action despite Collector’s order in 2022

In this regard, the Mumbai Collector had issued an order on 25th March 2022 directing the institution to pay ₹3.86 crore towards lease renewal charges. However, this amount has still not been deposited into the government treasury. Meanwhile, considering the present market value of the land, the government is reportedly suffering losses worth several crores of rupees.

Take disciplinary action against the guilty officials

The issue is not limited to one church alone. In several cities across Maharashtra, government lands continue to be misused even after lease periods have expired. Auditors have repeatedly pointed out huge revenue losses. Under Section 53 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, strict action should have been taken to remove unauthorised occupation and recover dues. However, due to the negligence of the Revenue Department, the land remains under the institution’s control. Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad has therefore demanded disciplinary action against the concerned officials from the Union Government’s Revenue Department.

Editorial Perspective

  • Considering such acts by Christian churches, it would not be wrong if some people compare them to the Land Jihad associated with Muslims.
  • Action must now be taken against the concerned government officials responsible for such negligence! It should also be investigated whether there was any collusion between these officials and the concerned church institution behind this dereliction of duty!
