Petition filed by Advocate Amita Sachdeva

New Delhi – A petition taking cognisance of Tamil Nadu opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin’s recent statement calling for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma has been filed in the Supreme Court. Advocate Amita Sachdeva has filed this contempt petition, alleging that despite the Supreme Court’s earlier observations, the Police have not taken action against Stalin. The matter is scheduled to be heard on 19 May.
DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin had, in September 2023, compared Sanatan Dharma to diseases such as malaria and dengue and had called for its eradication. He had stated that “Sanatan Dharma is based on the caste system and historical discrimination.” Following those remarks, multiple criminal complaints and petitions seeking action against him were filed before the Supreme Court.
Udhayanidhi Stalin repeatedly insulting Sanatan Dharma
In the fresh petition, Advocate Sachdeva stated that on 12 May, during the first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin again called for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma. He reportedly stated that “Sanatan Dharma, which divides people, must certainly be destroyed.” The petition further states that despite the matter being pending before the Supreme Court, and despite the Court earlier expressing displeasure over his statements, Udhayanidhi has continued making similar remarks. This amounts to deliberate disrespect towards the judicial process.
