Liquor to be sold only to persons above 21 years of age in Tamil Nadu

Decision by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay

Chennai – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has ordered strict enforcement of the 21-year age limit for the sale of liquor. Employees at all liquor shops will be required to verify the customer’s age. In case of suspicion, the customer will have to show an identity card (such as an Aadhaar card or other government identification). Strict action will be taken against the concerned employee if liquor is sold to people below 21 years of age.

At present, liquor shops in Tamil Nadu operate from 12 noon to 10 p.m. In order to control crime and enforce discipline, the Government is considering a proposal to restrict these timings until 8 p.m.

Editorial Perspective

  • Even if restrictions are imposed on to whom liquor is sold, how will the Government actually monitor who is consuming it?
  • Fundamentally, it is the responsibility of the Government, as a guardian of society, to inculcate values so that people do not consume liquor; however, no Government in any State appears to be making efforts in this regard!
