Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in Assam

Bill to be introduced in the Legislative Assembly on May 26

Himanta Biswa Sarma

Dispur (Assam) – After winning the Assam assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially announced the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the State. The decision has been approved in the cabinet meeting and the bill will be presented in the assembly on May 26th. The government has decided to completely exclude the tribal community from this law. After Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat, Assam will now be the next State to implement the law.

This law will cover issues such as inheritance, marriage, live-in relationships, and mandatory registration of marriage and divorce.

Editorial Perspective

Instead of implementing this law separately in individual States, the Union Government is expected to enact a single law for the entire country; otherwise, it will be implemented only in BJP-ruled States and not in others. This would not be appropriate from the nation’s point of view.
