Karnataka Congress Government withdraws order banning hijab in schools.

  • Revised order permits sacred wrist threads, Rudraksha beads and Janevu, but bans saffron shawls.

  • The previous BJP government had imposed a ban on hijab in 2022. (Hijab is a head-covering worn by Muslim women.)

  • It is indeed surprising that even after coming to power, the Congress government took four years to make such a decision. What would be wrong if Hindus vote the Congress government out of power in the next election and a pro-Hindu government that comes to power thereafter imposes a hijab ban once again?”

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – The Congress government in Karnataka has withdrawn the 2022 decision banning hijab in schools and colleges. According to the revised order, students will also be permitted to wear Kalava (sacred wrist thread), Rudraksha beads, turbans and Janevu in addition to hijab; however, the government has clarified that saffron shawls will not be permitted. In February 2022, the then-BJP government in Karnataka had made it mandatory for students in government colleges to adhere to the prescribed uniform code. Following this order, wearing hijab inside classrooms was banned in several government educational institutions.

The government stated that the decision was taken keeping the welfare of students in mind. It further noted in its order that there should be no discrimination in education. “The saffron shawl does not fall under religious attire. Therefore, saffron shawls will not be permitted in schools and colleges,” the government clarified.

“If hijab is permitted, saffron shawls should also be allowed” – Independent MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal.

Basangouda Patil Yatnal has demanded that if hijab is permitted in schools, Hindu students too should be allowed to wear saffron shawls.

He criticised the Karnataka government’s stand permitting schoolgirls to wear hijab along with their uniforms, while the matter regarding whether schoolgirls should be allowed to wear hijab remains pending before the Supreme Court of India, terming it as yet another attempt to safeguard the minority vote bank.

MLA Yatnal further stated that he would personally arrange to distribute saffron shawls to Hindu students. He also said that arrangements would be made to install idols of Shri Ganapati and Shri Saraswati in all schools and colleges, and that daily worship would be conducted there.
