Hindus oppose naming a junction in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, after Tipu Sultan

Kadapa (Andhra Pradesh) – Tension has escalated in the city after moves began to rename the Almaspet Circle as “Tipu Sultan Circle.” A large number of Muslims gathered at Almaspet Circle on 9 May, while Hindu organisations demanded that the junction instead be named “Hanuman Chowk,” leading to heightened tensions.

1. Earlier, the municipal corporation had approved a proposal to rename the circle after Tipu Sultan. However, alleging delay in implementing the proposal, Muslim organisations and leaders from the Indian National Congress began protests. Large numbers of Muslims gathered at the site, demanding that the administration immediately fulfill its promise.

2. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party and several Hindu organisations strongly opposed the decision. Objecting to naming the junction after Tipu Sultan, Hindu groups came out onto the streets and demanded that the junction instead be named “Hanuman Chowk.” Both groups came face-to-face during the protests. To prevent the situation from going out of control, the administration deployed a large Police force in the Almaspet area.
