Two former Chinese defence ministers sentenced to death in a corruption case

Beijing (China) – A court sentenced former Chinese defence ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe to death in a corruption case. Both leaders have been given the death penalty with a 2-year reprieve period. According to Chinese law, a ‘death sentence with reprieve’ means that the convict is not executed immediately. If he does not commit any new crime for 2 years, the death sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment.

According to experts, this action is part of President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign. Over the past few years, action has been taken against several senior officials in China’s military and defence establishment.
