BJP wins 18 seats in Murshidabad, Malda, and Uttar Dinajpur, where Muslim population Is around or above 50%
Division of Muslim votes also said to have benefited BJP

Kolkata – According to the 2011 Census, Muslims constituted 24.6% of the population in West Bengal. After 15 years, this proportion may have increased further. During this period, the state was governed by Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress, which is supportive to illegal immigration and involved in extensive minority appeasement. Despite this, the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Hindu candidates in every constituency across the State, including in districts with more than 50% Muslim population. This strategy has benefited the party electorally. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who won from the Nandigram constituency, had reportedly stated that he would work primarily for Hindus in his constituency. Hindu community now expects newly elected BJP legislators to do the same.

1. According to the 2011 Census, the Muslim population in the districts of Murshidabad, Malda, and Uttar Dinajpur was 66%, 51.27%, and 49.92% respectively. These proportions may have increased further today.
2. Despite the consolidated Muslim vote bank in these regions, BJP fielded only Hindu candidates across all 43 assembly constituencies in the three districts.
3. BJP won 18 seats in these three Muslim-majority districts, while Trinamool Congress secured 20 seats. In the 2021 elections, Trinamool had won 35 seats and BJP only 8. This time, apart from BJP and Trinamool, the Indian National Congress won 2 seats, Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party won 2 seats, and the Communist Party of India Marxist won 1 seat.
Reasons cited for BJP’s success
Following reasons are attributed to BJP’s success:
1. In constituencies where Muslim votes were influential enough to determine outcomes, most major parties fielded Muslim candidates. BJP, however, continued fielding Hindu candidates. In some areas, the division of Muslim votes among multiple candidates allegedly benefited BJP directly.
2. A “special intensive revision” of voter rolls reportedly removed lakhs of allegedly fake Muslim voter names, which helped BJP.
3. Along with this, in most places Hindu voters united and voted for the BJP. In fact, this election saw the highest voter turnout in Bengal since independence. The highest voter turnout in the state until now had been around 84%, but this time it increased to 92.47%. This means that Hindus across the state also voted in an organised manner. BJP experienced the benefit of this even in these three districts.
4. Wherever Muslim voters were present in overwhelming numbers, all major parties fielded Muslim candidates. In such constituencies, BJP’s Hindu candidate came third in some places and even fourth in others. For example, in the Sujapur constituency of Malda district, BJP candidate Abhijit Rajak came fourth. He received 20,000 votes. A similar situation occurred in Bhagabangola in Murshidabad district. There, BJP candidate Bhaskar Sarkar received 23,000 votes, but still came fourth. Likewise, in Raninagar, Ranapratap Singh Roy (22,000 votes) was also in fourth place. In the Domkal constituency, BJP leader Nandadulal Pal (13,000 votes) was in fourth place.
