Ticket fares of private travel companies in Maharashtra double to triple !

Mumbai – Private travel operators have increased ticket fares by two to three times during the summer holidays. Fares on routes to Kolhapur, Konkan, Solapur, and Nashik have risen sharply. Passengers are criticising the situation as there appears to be no effective control by the Transport Department.

Air-conditioned sleeper buses are charging between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500, while fares for seating arrangements range from ₹1,500 to ₹1,800. These tickets are usually available for ₹600 to ₹800.
Pradeep Patil, a private travel operator, stated that fares generally remain equal to or lower than those of government buses throughout the year; however, due to rising maintenance costs and employee salaries, fares are increased during peak travel periods. (Why should the common people bear the burden of this ? This amounts to exploitation of passengers ! – Editor)

Rohan Pawar, a passenger, said that there are no additional buses of the State Transport Corporation for Kolhapur, and railway tickets are also difficult to obtain. Therefore, passengers are left with no option but to purchase expensive tickets. He suggested that the government should operate additional services for western Maharashtra, similar to those provided for the Konkan region.

Editorial Perspective

  • Holidays and exploitation of passengers have become synonymous. Passengers must raise their voice through lawful means and hold private travel operators accountable !
  • A fare hike of two to three times above the usual rates is clearly excessive. Those responsible should be penalised !
