India to soon be equipped with ‘Hypersonic Glide’ and ‘Hypersonic Cruise’ missiles

Twice as fast as BrahMos missiles

(Hypersonic refers to speeds greater than 5 times the speed of sound)

New Delhi – India will soon be equipped with hypersonic glide and hypersonic cruise missiles, according to Samir Kamat, head of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He also stated that the first test of the hypersonic glide missile could take place soon.

1. These advanced hypersonic missiles will be twice as fast as the supersonic BrahMos missile. Due to their speed and maneuverability, they are expected to be extremely difficult for any defence system in the world to intercept. The goal is to induct this missile system into the armed forces within five years after formal approval.

2. India is also developing an anti-ship missile that will be faster than the BrahMos. Its third-phase trial is scheduled to be conducted this month.

3. Samir Kamat said that the team is technically ready for the Agni-6 missile programme. Work will begin as soon as the government gives the green signal.

4. Agni-6 is expected to be the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the Agni series, with an estimated strike range of 10,000 to 12,000 kilometers. It is also expected to be capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, allowing it to target several locations simultaneously.

5. Russia currently possesses hypersonic missiles like Zircon missile and Kinzhal missile. China has the DF-ZF, which is already deployed. The United States is considered to be somewhat behind in this technology. While it has supersonic systems like the Tomahawk missile, its recent hypersonic projects, such as AGM-183 ARRW, have not been successful.
