Delhi Government to build cowsheds for stray cows

Chief Minister Rekha Sharma

New Delhi – The Rekha Sharma Government in Delhi has taken a commendable decision to address the issue of cows roaming freely on the roads of the capital and their miserable condition. Under this plan, cowsheds will be linked to the green forest areas of the ‘Ridge’ region. The Delhi Ridge is a forest area near the Aravalli mountain ranges. Spread over more than 7,000 hectares, this lush green zone is also known as the ‘lungs of Delhi’. The primary objective of this scheme is to provide shelter to cows in a natural and open environment, away from heavy crowds and traffic congestion. This environment will be highly beneficial for their health. Accordingly, the Delhi Government has stated that cowsheds will be constructed in the Ridge area.

The Government has already selected land in 13 districts of Delhi for setting up new cowsheds. These centres will not be limited to providing shelter to cows, but will function as self-sufficient institutions with modern facilities such as veterinary services, solar energy systems and biogas plants.

Chief Minister Rekha Sharma stated that earlier, due to improper management of manure, cow dung used to flow into drains and eventually mix with the waters of the Yamuna River. To address this issue, 6 biogas plants will be established. These plants will have the capacity to process approximately 1,500 tonnes of dung per day. Necessary funds have been allocated for these initiatives.

Editorial Perspective

In fact, all state Governments should take such a commendable decision. Animal-loving organisations should also take the initiative for this.
