TMC alleges tampering of voting machines in CM Mamata Banerjee’s constituency

CM and party leaders stage sit-in protest outside strong room

Kolkata – The ruling All India Trinamool Congress has alleged tampering of voting machines in Bhabanipur, the constituency of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. On the night of 30 April, several party leaders and workers gathered outside the strong room at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, where the voting machines are securely stored, and staged a sit-in protest. The Chief Minister herself remained present at the site for about four hours. The party accused the Election Commission of India of opening the strong room without prior notice and claimed that some suspicious individuals were seen in the area.

We will lay down our lives to prevent tampering: Mamata Banerjee

During the protest, Mamata Banerjee stated that if anyone attempted to loot the voting machines or manipulate the counting process, they would be ready to sacrifice their lives to prevent it.

The Trinamool Congress also posted a video on its account on X, claiming that it showed Election Commission officials attempting to open ballot boxes in the presence of representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Election Commission’s clarification

However, the Election Commission rejected these allegations, stating that the activity in question was only the scrutiny of postal ballots. It also ensured that all voting machines are completely secure.

Editorial Perspective

Despite claiming that her party would win 226 seats in 2026, Mamata Banerjee is alleging irregularities in her own constituency. If she were to lose and later blame it on the BJP, it would not be surprising. Such statements may be seen by some as preemptive positioning.
