Defence budget increased by 8.9%

New Delhi – With an 8.9% increase in its defence budget, India has now moved to the 5th position among countries with the highest defence expenditure globally. According to a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending reached a record $2.89 trillion last year. In this ranking, India reached the 5th position in 2025 with defence spending of $92.1 billion (around ₹8,73,179 crores).

Among the top five countries leading in global defence spending, United States ranks first, followed by China in second place, Russia in third, Germany in fourth, and India in fifth. Together, these five countries account for 58% of total global defence expenditure, amounting to approximately $1.6 trillion (around ₹151.69 lakh crore).

Increase in Pakistan’s defence spending

In 2025, Pakistan also increased its defence spending by 11%, reaching $11.9 billion (around ₹1,12,826 crore). This rise is primarily attributed to arms procurement deals with China, including aircraft and missiles, following armed conflict with India.
