Mumbai – The Malvani Police arrested Adnan Khan (age-24 years) for carrying 1.15 kg sperm whale ambergris. Ambergris is a highly sought after substance in the wildlife trade. As the Police intercepted him and started questioning, he argued with them, assaulted a Police constable and tried to flee by jumping into the creek; but he was nabbed. The Malvani Police have filed a case against him and further investigations are on.

What is ambergris ?

Ambergris is a rare waxy substance produced in the intestines of sperm whales and is highly valued in the luxury perfume industry as a fixative. It is used in certain products and helps in preserving the fragrance of a perfume for a longer period. It is often referred to as ‘floating gold’. Ambergris is illegal in India because it is derived from the sperm whale, an endangered species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Its sale-purchase, storage and trade are illegal in India. It is considered to be a serious matter as regards the crimes related to the wildlife.

Editorial Perspective

Muslim accused attacking Police has become a routine matter. It is necessary for the Mumbai Police to create the awe earlier felt by people. When is the Police Department going to work on it ?
