“Muslims only” rental ad sparks controversy in London

London (UK) – A serious issue has come to light here regarding rental housing. An investigation by a national newspaper has revealed that some landlords are openly discriminating based on religion, caste, and language.

Objectionable ads on social media

Thousands of advertisements have been found on platforms like Facebook and Telegram stating, “Muslims only,” “for Muslim girls,” or “Muslims preferred.” These are considered violations of the UK’s anti-discrimination law, the Equality Act 2010.

Conditions based on religion, language, and region

Some advertisements also include conditions such as “Hindus only,” “Gujarati-speaking,” or “Punjabi boys only.” In some cases, rooms have been reserved exclusively for people from specific regions like Haryana or Kerala.

Instances of rejection and misconduct

In the Barking area, a non-Muslim individual reportedly inquired about a room advertised as “Muslims only” and was directly refused by the landlord, who allegedly told him to “leave.”

Possibility of legal action

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has clarified that discrimination based on religion, race, or gender is illegal. Landlords posting such advertisements may face fines and other legal action. Following complaints, Facebook has removed many such ads and pages.

Government’s stance

The UK government has stated clearly that discrimination based on religion or community will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against it.

Editorial Perspective

  • The Mayor of London is a Muslim of Pakistani origin and considering the growing nuisance of Muslims in London and across Britain makes such incidents seem minor
  • Those who protest loudly when Muslims are denied housing in Hindu-majority areas of Mumbai - will they speak up now ?
