A significant advantage for India’s defense sector !

Tokyo (Japan) – In response to growing threats from China and North Korea, Japan has introduced significant changes to its arms export regulations. As part of a major shift in its defense policy, Japan lifted its ban on the export of lethal weapons on April 21, 2026. These restrictions had been in place since World War II, when Japan positioned itself as a “peace-oriented nation.” The decision was approved during meetings of the National Security Council and the Cabinet. The move is expected to be beneficial for India.
1. China has condemned Japan’s decision, while countries such as Australia and the Philippines have welcomed it.
2. The lifting of the export ban has opened the doors of the global market for Japan. The country possesses advanced shipbuilding capabilities and modern naval infrastructure. Japan’s Soryu and Taigei-class submarines are regarded among the best in the world. Additionally, Japan is a leader in the production of surface-to-air missile systems, combat vehicles, and artillery platforms.
3. Japan’s decision is expected to facilitate easier access to advanced technologies for India. Under the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, the country’s defense sector has already been making steady progress. In August 2025, India and Japan signed a joint declaration to enhance defense capabilities. This development is likely to strengthen India’s defense industrial base and reinforce security in the Indo-Pacific region.
