Commendable attempt of the State Government in the background of increasing consumption of narcotics

Mumbai – Two students died due to overdose of narcotics during a music concert held at NESCO Centre in Goregaon. Considering the increasing drug-abuse cases, it has been decided by the State Government to launch a campaign ‘Mumbai Against Drugs’ for drug-free Mumbai with effect from 01.05.2026, coinciding with ‘Maharashtra Day’, informed Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the Minister for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, and joint Suburban Guardian Minister, in a high-level meeting held at District Collector’s office in Bandra. He further informed that the campaign ‘Mumbai Against Drugs’ will be undertaken by the State Government for the whole year, from 01.05.2026 to 01.05.2027, under the guidance of State Chief Minister.
Minister Lodha further stated –
1. Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis has been closely monitoring the case of Goregaon. Mumbai Police are also efficiently carrying on their duty and the event organisers and a few drug-peddlers have been arrested. They will be severely punished but creating awareness amongst people towards this issue is important to avoid recurrence.
2. The campaign will be first launched at preliminary level in the suburbs. Later, it will be comprehensively implemented bringing together all sections of society, and a committee will be formed in this context. This committee, with the help of social organisations, students organisations and voluntary non-Governmental institutions/ NGOs will take up different initiatives to stop the young generation from drug abuse.
3. Chairmen of the committee will be appointed from the members of voluntary organisations working in the respective areas in the field of drug abuse. The current Ward Officers of the Municipal Corporation will be the deputy chairmen of the committee. The twelve members of the committee will include officers from Social Justice Department, senior Police Officers of the local Police stations, psychotherapists and education officers. The local MPs, MLAs and municipal councillors will be special invitee members of the committee.
