Bhandara: In Salebhata village, under the jurisdiction of Lakhani Police Station, police personnel who had gone to stop alleged cattle smuggling were reportedly attacked by smugglers. It is alleged that one of the accused grabbed a police officer by the collar and pushed him.

However, Lakhani Police Inspector Subhash Barse stated, “No such incident of collar-grabbing or manhandling took place. Nevertheless, a case has been registered against the accused for obstructing government work.” He also informed that 15 cattle were rescued and sent to a cowshed.

1. Activists from Goraksha Hindu Dal and Bajrang Dal received information that a large number of cattle were being held in farmland in Salebhata village and were likely to be transported for slaughter. They passed this information to the police. (A question arises: If such information can reach activists, why couldn’t the police; who have access to official resources; obtain it themselves?)

2. When police personnel and activists reached the spot, the alleged smugglers reportedly became aggressive.

3. One of the accused allegedly pushed a police officer, while another, carrying a stick, tried to prevent the vehicle transporting the cattle from being taken to a cowshed. The police were also allegedly stopped on the road and threatened. A video of the incident has been circulated on social media.

Bajrang Dal has demanded strict action against those accused of attacking police personnel.

Editorial Perspective

  • Is it that the police fear cattle smugglers, or are they protecting their image under some pressure? If such a question arises in people’s minds, what is wrong with it ?
  • What is the use of police who, even at the risk of their own lives, end up providing protection to cattle smugglers ?
