Mumbai – The Bombay High Court on 15 April rejected the plea seeking the release of Abu Salem, a convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The hearing was conducted before a bench comprising Justices Ajay Gadkari and Kamal Khata.
Appearing on behalf of the Union Government, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh argued that the petition filed by Salem was not maintainable and could not be accepted. Earlier, in 2025, Salem’s plea had come up for hearing, when the High Court had stated that although the petition did not appear appropriate, it would still be admitted for hearing.
Following the Mumbai serial blasts, Abu Salem had fled abroad. He was later convicted by the court and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2005, he was extradited from Portugal. As per international extradition arrangements, the Government of India cannot sentence him to more than 25 years of imprisonment. In his petition, Salem claimed that considering remission for good conduct, his sentence would be completed on 28 February 2025. However, in reality, his 25-year sentence will be completed on 10 November 2030.
Abu Salem is an international criminal facing serious charges such as terrorism, murder, and extortion. He is currently serving his sentence at Taloja Central Jail.
