Khalistan supporters gathered ‘paid protesters’ in Canada

  • Hindus allege on social media

  • Khalistani protests fizzle out in many places

Toronto (Canada) – Khalistani supporters raised slogans against India outside the Triveni Temple in Brampton, Canada. Due to their gathering, a tense atmosphere prevailed in the city for about two hours. In several cities across Canada, pro-Khalistan groups have been insisting on holding referendums for the creation of a separate Khalistan. As part of this, they attempted to stage protests outside Hindu temples; however, in most places, these protests failed to gain traction. Importantly, some users on social media have alleged that “Khalistani extremists offered 100 Canadian dollars to gather people. Around 40–50 individuals were encouraged to raise anti-India slogans.”

1. On March 5, as devotees were gathering at the temple for prayers, Khalistan supporters assembled on the road outside between approximately 12pm and 2pm. The banned organisation “Sikhs for Justice” staged a protest outside the temple.

2. A similar protest was planned outside the Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Surrey, British Columbia; however, the Khalistan supporters were not allowed to demonstrate there.

Neglect by Canadian media

Canadian media did not report on the Khalistani protests or the opposition by Hindus. Members of the local Hindu community allege that Canadian media often ignore such incidents.

Journalist Darshan Maharaja’s allegation against Khalistan supporters

Analyst and journalist Darshan Maharaja stated on X that a participant in the protest informed him that each person was being paid 100 Canadian dollars to attend. This claim sparked discussion on social media, with many criticising Khalistani groups. Critics argue that to project that the Khalistan movement is still active in Canada, organisers are now relying on hired protestors.

Maharaja also criticised Canadian politicians, stating that for the past 50 years, leaders have protected such elements due to the lure of votes and donations, which has emboldened them today.

Condemnation by the Hindu community

The Hindu Canadian Foundation and the Triveni Temple administration have condemned the protests. Community leaders stated that the sole purpose of holding political protests outside places of worship is to intimidate devotees and disturb peace. In a statement, the Hindu Canadian Foundation said that no threats or provocative actions can deter them from practicing their faith.
