Former soldier fires at radical attackers to protect his sister

Mumbra (Thane Dist., Maharashtra) – A former soldier, Jayan Shivanandan Nair, ultimately opened fire on three men on 2 April who had been harassing his sister for several days while she was passing through the street and had ignored repeated warnings. Near the Mumbra bypass road, he fired five rounds at Akbar Abdul Shaikh, Abdul Hasan Shaikh, and Sameer Ahmad Shaikh. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. After being shot, all three collapsed on the spot and were later taken to a hospital. Akbar died, while Hasan and Sameer are critically injured.

1. Earlier, Jayan had tried to counsel the accused as both a brother and a soldier; however, their harassment reportedly continued to escalate.

2. Following the incident, Jayan was arrested, and his pistol was seized. A case has been registered against him under charges of murder and provisions of the Arms Act.

3. Among the general public, discussions have arisen questioning how ordinary citizens are expected to protect themselves if the Police are unable to ensure the safety of Hindu girls.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Those so-called seculars, who claim that “violence against Muslims is increasing”, may raise their voices; however, society leaders and the government must reflect on why a former soldier was forced to take such steps.
  • Across India, Hindus have organised protests and submitted memorandums to curb such incidents of harassment, but their demands are often ignored. If the system continues to remain indifferent toward such issues, then who will be responsible if people take the law into their own hands in the future?
