Reports of a “lockdown” are rumours : Union Government

(Lockdown means a restriction on movement and transport)

New Delhi – Amid discussions about a possible shortage of LPG gas in the country and rising petrol-diesel prices due to the war in the Middle East, rumours have been circulating that a lockdown may be imposed in India. This has created an atmosphere of fear among citizens. In some cities, long queues were seen outside petrol pumps.

The Union Government has now responded to this. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated in a post on ‘X’ that the reports of a lockdown in India are completely false. No such proposal is under consideration by the Government of India. Spreading such rumours and creating panic is irresponsible and harmful.

He added that although the global situation is uncertain at present, the government is closely monitoring energy, supply chains, and essential goods. The government is ensuring the proper supply of fuel, energy, and other necessities across the country. Energy supplies are continuing without disruption, and India is prepared to face any challenges.

Excise duty on petrol and diesel reduced

The Union government has reduced excise duty on petrol from ₹13 to ₹3, and on diesel from ₹10 to zero. Regarding this, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that even a common person knows how limited India’s oil and gas production is, and that the country depends on other nations. Since gas and petrol are essential for daily life, this major decision was taken to prevent price hikes and keep costs under control. The duty has been reduced to an almost unimaginable extent.

20% increase in LPG supply for commercial use in the states

The central government has revised the allocation of LPG for commercial use, increasing supply to the states. Although there will be a 20% increase, this additional LPG will be entirely for industrial use. Industries such as steel, automobile, textile, and others will receive this additional supply.
