Gandhinagar (Gujarat) – The BJP government in Gujarat has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state assembly with a majority. With this, Gujarat has become the second state in the country after Uttarakhand to implement the UCC. In Goa, such a law has existed since the Portuguese era.
What does the law include ?
The law includes several key provisions such as mandatory registration of marriages, uniform rules for divorce, and penalties for violations. Those who fail to register their marriage may face a fine of ₹10,000. Practicing polygamy can lead to imprisonment of up to four years.
Divorces outside the court will be considered invalid, and those opting for such divorces may face legal punishment.
For live-in relationships, couples are required to register their relationship within three months. This provision has been introduced to provide legal protection. Cases involving cheating in such relationships will not be tolerated in Gujarat.
Uniform divorce rules will apply to all communities and religions.
