Attempt to assassinate him by a 63-year-old man during a wedding ceremony

Jammu – Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on the night of March 11st during a wedding ceremony. A 63-year-old man named Kamal Singh allegedly opened fire at him. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit Dr. Abdullah. His security personnel immediately intervened and apprehended the attacker.
At the time of the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary was also present with Dr. Abdullah. Police are investigating the motive behind the attack.
1. CCTV footage surfaces
CCTV footage of the incident has also emerged. It reportedly shows the attacker, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, approaching from behind and pointing a gun at Farooq Abdullah’s head. Security guards quickly pushed his hand aside, causing the bullet to be fired into the air.
2. Incident occurred at a wedding function
Farooq Abdullah, Surinder Choudhary, and other senior leaders and workers of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference were attending the wedding of the son of Surjit Singh. The accused, Kamal Singh, is reportedly Surjit Singh’s cousin. He is a businessman and owns several shops in the old city area.
3. Licensed weapon
According to the police, Kamal Singh has possessed a licensed firearm for several years.

The accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Jammu, allegedly confessed that he had been attempting to assassinate Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s son and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that a man came very close with a pistol and fired a shot. He expressed gratitude that his father escaped unharmed and questioned how someone could approach so closely despite Z+ security and National Security Guard protection. He also stated that he did not know the accused personally.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary described the incident as a serious security lapse. He questioned how such a major error could have occurred and stated that there were no local police personnel present at the venue, calling it a significant failure in the security arrangement.
