‘Surajya Abhiyan’ demands probe into ₹10,000-crore betting racket linked to T-20 World Cup final

Nagpur/Panaji, 8 March – With the T-20 Cricket World Cup final between India and New Zealand scheduled to be played in Karnavati (Gujarat), betting worth nearly ₹10,000 crore is reportedly being conducted across the country. The racket is allegedly being operated through high-tech applications and offshore servers (servers located in data centres outside the country).

In this connection, alert citizen Mr Dilip Shetye from Ribandar, Panaji, has submitted a written complaint to the Panaji Police Commissioner and the Director General of Police. Similarly, a vigilant citizen from Nagpur has lodged a complaint via e-mail.

The ‘Surajya Abhiyan’ of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has extended public support to these complaints and has demanded that the matter be thoroughly investigated at a high level through a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Observations made by ‘Surajya Abhiyan’

1.  The Police administration should have taken Suo motu cognisance in the public interest and initiated prompt action based on betting-related reports published in leading newspapers.

2.  Betting of such massive magnitude damages India’s global reputation. It not only causes international embarrassment but also puts the credibility of Indian cricket at risk.

3.  Betting and gambling flourish on a large scale during cricket tournaments. Investigative agencies are aware that certain individuals operate these networks. Although arrests of bookmakers are occasionally reported, the betting market soon resumes operations. Investigation must be carried out to know the real culprits. Instead of merely catching small operators, authorities must identify and act against the masterminds behind these syndicates.

Measures suggested by Surajya Abhiyan to curb betting

1. Considering the enormous scale of ₹10,000 crore, the Police should immediately contact the concerned media organisations, verify the sources of the information, and dismantle the control centres of betting operators. The seized money should be utilised for public welfare schemes.

2. Strict action should be taken under the Online Gaming Act 2025 enacted by the Union Government, under which facilitating illegal betting is a non-bailable offence.

3. The Enforcement Directorate and Cyber Cell should block hawala channels (an informal money-transfer system used in parts of the Middle East and South Asia) as well as digital payment routes used for such transactions.

4. A State-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) should be constituted immediately to investigate links between local bookmakers and international betting syndicates.

5. To prevent international disrepute of India and its cricket, a surgical strike is expected against this network before the match concludes. The Surajya Abhiyan has stated that it will continue to pursue the matter in the interest of administrative transparency and national welfare.
