Even famous actors are not above the law !

In the ‘Kantara’ film controversy, the Karnataka High Court reprimands actor Ranveer Singh for disrespect to a Deity

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – No individual has the right to hurt people’s religious sentiments under the guise of personal talent. Using strong words, the Karnataka High Court reprimanded actor Ranveer Singh, stating that so-called “superstars” are not above the law. The court took serious note of remarks made by Singh last year at the International Film Festival of India in Goa while speaking about the Hindi film Kantara, observing that the comments amounted to disrespect toward a deity. At present, the court has directed the state government not to take any coercive or punitive action against Ranveer Singh. The next hearing is scheduled for March 2nd, and until then, Singh has been instructed to fully cooperate with the investigation.

As an actor, your responsibility is greater

The court observed that the actor whom Ranveer Singh imitated; Rishab Shetty; was portraying the role of a deity. In such circumstances, remarks of this nature can deeply hurt religious sentiments. Whether one is Ranveer Singh or anyone else, the court said, such inappropriate language cannot be justified. As an actor, the responsibility is greater because actors influence millions of people.

An apology does not erase the remark!

Ranveer Singh had tendered an apology in the matter. However, the court made it clear that a later apology does not nullify what was said earlier. “The internet forgets nothing. Whatever you say leaves a permanent record. Artists must exercise special restraint, and such matters cannot be treated lightly. Popularity or talent does not place anyone above the law,” the court firmly stated.

The admission itself shows negligence !

During arguments on behalf of Ranveer Singh, his counsel admitted that the remarks were completely insensitive and constituted a serious mistake. The court observed that this very admission indicates the actor’s careless conduct.

What is the case about ?

In November 2025, during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa, Ranveer Singh reenacted on stage a scene related to a deity from Kantara Chapter 1. While praising Rishab Shetty’s performance, he referred to the scene depicting the deity’s possession of the body.

However, Singh described the deity using the term “female ghost” and mimicked certain gestures. This triggered strong reactions, with many; especially from the Tulu-speaking community; stating that it insulted Karnataka’s deity traditions. The remarks sparked widespread outrage on social media, following which a case was registered against Ranveer Singh.

Editorial Perspective

It must be noted that disrespect toward Hindu Deities often comes from Hindus themselves; unless such acts invite strict punishment, others will not be deterred !
