Bhojshala survey reveals Kamal Maula Mosque built on the site of a Hindu temple

  • ASI’s 2,100-page report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court

  • 94 idols found, including that of Deity Ganesh and Deity Brahma, Sanskrut inscriptions also found

Indore (Madhya Pradesh) – The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on February 24th submitted a scientific report at the Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court regarding the Kamal Maula Mosque in the Bhojshala area of Dhar in Madhya Pradesh. Copies of the report have been sent to the plaintiff, the defender and the Government. The Court has directed them to file their objections and comments within the next 2 weeks. The report states that the Kamal Maula Mosque was built using parts of ancient temples, architectural elements, fragments of sculptures and inscriptions. The existing structure was built centuries later without much attention to symmetry, design or uniformity.

The matter was heard in the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on February 23rd. A bench of Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla and Justice Alok Awasthi noted that the 2,100-page and 10-volume scientific survey report, which was completed in 98 days, has already been opened from a sealed envelope and copies of it have been given to all the parties.

The Court has directed to maintain the status quo and clarified that no change will be made in the current arrangements for worship and namaz till further orders. The next hearing will be held on March 16th, 2026 and the objections and suggestions submitted at that time will be considered.

Evidence found that temple-style architecture existed in the past

According to the report, the archaeological team has discovered the remains of 94 idols and sculptures, including figures of Deity Ganesh, Brahma, Narasimha, Bhairav, and various animals. Many of the fragments have Sanskrut inscriptions and are believed to date back to the 12th to 16th centuries. These findings indicate that temple-style architecture and art existed here in the past.

What is the dispute ?

The Bhojshala dispute has been a religious and historically sensitive issue for many years. The Hindu community worships the site as Shri Vagdevi Temple, while the Muslim side calls it the Kamal Maula Mosque. After the matter went to Court, the ASI conducted a survey here on the orders of the Court and submitted its report.

Editorial Perspective

Not only Bhojshala, but many Hindu temples and religious places in India were demolished by Muslim invaders, and mosques were built there. Keeping this in mind, the Union Government must survey all such places, reveal the truth and hand over these places to Hindus.
