Tel Aviv (Israel) – A controversy has erupted after Mike Huckabee, the United States Ambassador to Israel, stated that even if Israel were to take control of most of the Middle East, the US would have no objection. Fourteen Arab and Islamic countries have issued a joint statement condemning the remark.
During a television interview, journalist Carlson referred to a Biblical account mentioning a promise of land to the descendants of Abraham (the Jews), stretching from the Euphrates River to the Nile River. In the present geopolitical context, this region would include parts of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Responding to this, Ambassador Huckabee said, “If they took it all, it would be ‘appropriate’.” He later clarified that Israel is not attempting to gain control over these areas and that he was not calling for such action.
Which countries have condemned the statement ?
Following the remark, the foreign ministries of Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Turkey, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Palestine issued a joint statement condemning the comments, calling them dangerous and provocative.
The secretariats of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation also registered objections, stating that such remarks pose a threat to regional security, peace and stability.
